The Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling provides graduate students with an in-depth knowledge and practice skills in counselling. The program is intended for students who desire to develop knowledge, skills and competencies for professional practice in counselling. Graduates will develop the skills to competently serve individuals, families, and groups in the community.
Professional Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling Level 5
This programme prepares an individual for employment as a counsellor. Upon completion of the course learners are qualified to apply for BACP Registration and individual Accreditation when they have completed the required clinical hours. and may be employed in such sites as community agencies, schools, counselling centres and private practise.
The diploma is validated under NCFE Quality Licence Scheme. The aim of the programme is to provide counselling training and qualification for those interested in developing themselves as counsellors or those who wish to build on existing skill sets to deepen their relational stance with their client group to a level appropriate for safe and effective practise.
This counselling programme follows the guidelines of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy to which students may apply for accreditation as an independent counsellor when they have completed the required clinical hours stipulated by BACP.
The course is taken over 2 years six months part-time. By completing our Diploma Counselling programme learners will have acquired the necessary theory, skills, placement and supervision hours to apply to become a BACP Registered counsellor. Once registered, learners can work towards accreditation as an independent counsellor.
Diploma Programme Details
The diploma provides a focused psychotherapeutic training that challenges and contributes to a wide range of understandings of the therapeutic encounter.
The psychotherapeutic counselling diploma training can lead to a career as a practising counselling clinician, with engaging and rewarding work in the mental health services or in private practice.
At the heart of the diploma programme is a multidisciplinary and personalised experience. A collaborative environment is encouraged between tutors and learners. This means you have flexibility in decisions regarding the learning path you take. As a graduate of Reflect On Academy, you’ll find yourself at the centre of a student-focused environment that nurtures innovation, critical thinking and creativity.
As such, Reflect On Academy learners undergo their own empowering process which gives them greater control of their lives, increasing their ability to effect change and positively impact societies.
The programme offers you two different ways to achieve your diploma in counselling. Classroom-based face-to-face sessions designed to be completed in two years six months and consists of two Saturdays a month or weekday in-class (Thursday) evenings and one Saturday a month attendance. Speak with an advisor to see which programme works best for you. There is no online learning for this programme. Teaching methods include case studies and experiential practice, in addition to traditional teaching and learning methods.
You are expected to work throughout the course with your own clients (normally three adult clients on a minimum basis of once a week. You must complete a minimum of 150 hours of supervised clinical practice during the course to qualify for the diploma. This will count towards the total of 450 hours needed for BACP membership.
Every student is expected to undertake individual counselling with an approved counsellor throughout the duration of the course.
The course contains two strands of further training and development as part of the integrative perspective: the psychodynamic and the experiential/humanistic. The course explores the tensions and convergences between these in different ways.
- Psychological Approaches: Humanistic: Person Centred, Cognitive-Behavioural, Psychodynamic Therapy and Human Life Cycle Development

Effective In-Class Learning
The Diploma in counselling programme utilises a cohort learning structure, which means that you complete all of your courses in a classroom setting with the same group of learners, in a sort of built-in support group. Reflect On Academy clinical practitioners are deeply committed to developing your theoretical knowledge and clinical skills. They will walk you through the Diploma programme then help you network with local professionals to further your success once you graduate
The course uses an experiential approach to teaching. It aims to open up learning opportunities that enables the candidates to develop a better understanding of themselves in relation to other people and enhance their ability to provide counselling.
Assessment is by written assignments, clinical placement and personal therapy.
Entry Requirements for the Professional Counselling Diploma:
- Candidates will have successfully completed Reflect – On Advanced Certificate in Counselling or equivalent of 120 hours at Level 3
- Provide evidence of good character and personal attributes via referee reports.
- Provide evidence of ability to succeed at higher study level.
- Enhanced disclosures via the Criminal Records Bureau

Where the Diploma Can Take You
The Diploma prepares graduates to pursue registration as Registered Counsellor (R.C.) offered by the BACP based on appropriate registration, to enter practice as a counsellor or therapist.
