The Advanced Certificate in Counselling Skills and Theory (Level 3)

The Advanced Certificate in Counselling Skills and Theory Programme has been designed for the wide variety of people who wish to know more about counselling skills or those looking for theory to support their counselling skills. The Certificate is awarded in recognition of proficiency to use therapeutic counselling skills. However, it may not be considered or used as a licence to practice as a counsellor.

No previous experience required, however you should be fairly confident about your ability to read professional literature and to write with a personal voice, and you must have an interest in people and a desire to work with change, growth and development. About the course


This is a very practical course with an emphasis on learning through doing, which will give you the opportunity to practise counselling skills. The course will also enable you to develop greater awareness of yourself, others and your interaction with people.


The course will give you an opportunity to:

  • Develop an understanding of Person Centred approach and the counselling relationship
  • Prepare to use diversity understandings and skills in a counselling relationship
  • Prepare to manage the counselling process within a user-centred contract
  • Develop personal awareness and understanding in preparation for counselling work
  • Develop an understanding of the counselling process

Teaching Methods

The course uses an experiential approach to teaching. It aims to open up learning opportunities that enables the candidates to develop a better understanding of themselves in reation to other people and enhance their ability to provide counselling.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is by written assignments throughout the year of the certificate.

What will I get at the end of the course?

Advanced Certificate in Counselling Skills Theory (Level 3)

Where Next?

When you complete this course you may go on to the Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling.

Accrediation

There is no British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) programme accreditation scheme for certificate training programmes. The programme is an excellent introductory training for those who wish to know more about counselling skills and a ‘counselling approach’. The course offers valuable skills, which can be either for your own personal development or in the workplace and is therefore a very good choice for anyone who wishes to make use of a range of skills to enhance their effectiveness at work.
